Motorcycle Thief Jailed

For allegedly stealing an unregistered Jincheg motorcycle from Ibadan, Oyo State, a teenager, Segun Adebayo, 19, was yesterday sentenced to six-month imprisonment without an option of fine.

The accused is standing trial on a one-count charge of stealing before the Ota Magistrate’s Court presided by Alhaji A. Adenariwo.

The prosecutor, Inspector O. Ohiku told the court that the accused stole an unregistered Jincheng motorcycle with chassis number LJCPAGLHOASB51582 in Ibadan at about 1.30p.m. on 23 June, 2011 at Ewu-Ajasa.

On his way to sell the motorcycle, he was arrested by the police and asked to present the documents and licence which he could not.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 388 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State.

He pleaded guilty and explained to the court that he stole the motorcycle in order to escape from armed robbers while coming to Lagos from Ibadan. He also admitted that he attempted to sell the motorbike.

The accused replied that the motorcycle had been with him for three days and that he had made N4,000 with it, adding that he was arrested when he carried a passenger from Lagos to Ogun State.

Adenariwo found the accused guilty and sentenced him to six months imprisonment with hard labour without an option of fine.
