3 Drown As Boat Capsizes On Benue River

Three persons reportedly drowned on River Benue when a boat conveying over 20 people capsized yesterday.

 

P.M.NEWS gathered that the passengers, who were mostly business women, took off from Wadata in Makurdi and were heading to a village across the river to purchase maize for sale when the boat in which they were travelling capsized.

 

It was further gathered that when the incident happened, distress calls were made to mariners who only managed to rescue most of the passengers who could not swim across the river to the bank of the overflowing river .

Confirming the report, the Benue State Police Command spokesman Mr. Alaribe Ejike said that the mishap occurred early yesterday, adding that Joseph Awuhi, a relation to one of the victims reported the case at the state command.

 

The Police Public Relations Officer added that the paddler of the boat escaped before the police arrived the scene.

 

Mr. Ejike said efforts were being made by the police to arrest the culprit, saying that initial investigations revealed that the paddler caused the mishap.
