Rain: Rep Condoles With Lagosians

A member of the House of Representatives representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, has condoled with Lagosians, especially familes of those who lost their lives during last Sunday’s rainfall in the state.

Speaking with journalists in Ikeja, Faleke described the heavy rain as unprecedented but added that it was an act of God hence there was practically nothing anybody can do to prevent rain from falling.

“My heart goes out to Lagosians on the devastating effect of last Sunday’s rain, especially those who lost relatives and valuable properties. I pray for God’s mercies for us all especially at this period. It is actually an act of God. Human beings don’t manufacture rain, it is from God,” he said. He, however, called on Lagosians to learn from the devastating effect of the flood caused by the rain and stop dumping refuse in gutters and drainages.

“We should all learn from this event and stop dumping refuse in gutters and drainages. The negative effect of the rain could have been reduced if some drainage channels have not been blocked by indiscriminate dumping of refuse by some people. I want to appeal to our people to stop this act as it is inimical to our survival,” he said.

Faleke, former Chairman of Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), advised the people of the state to ensure proper clearing of gutters and drainage channels around their environment so that flood will have easy access during rainfall.

“At this crucial period especially when the rainy season is at its peak, we should be conscious of our environment.

“We should maintain cleanliness all the time while we should ensure proper and regular clearing of gutters and drainage channels around us. Through this, we can reduce negative effect of flood whenever it rains,” he said.

The former Chairman of Conference 57, umbrella organisation for council chairmen in Lagos State, assured the people of the state that the state government is equal to the task as it is committed to putting in place measures that will reduce flood menace in the state. “But while the government is working round the clock to achieve its aim of reducing the flood problem in the state, our people should also assist the government by desisting from acts that can reduce government’s efforts to nought one of which is indiscriminate dumping of refuse in gutters and drainage channels whenever it rains,” Faleke said.
