Students, Area Boys Clash Over Mobile Phone

One person has been arrested by the police at Oko-Oba Division, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, following the invasion of Lagos State University by street urchins popularly known as Area Boys.

P.M.NEWS learnt that there was a fight among the are boys in a drinking spot near the LASU extension, Abule-Egba, on Sunday after which one of them alleged that his cell phone had been stolen. He was said to have claimed that he suspected that a LASU student stole the phone.

It was gathered that on Monday, the area boys went to the school to give the students till 6 p.m. the same day to return the phone or be prepared to face the music. They were said to have also threatened to block the road and ensure that no LASU student passes it.

Speaking with P.M.NEWS after the incident, the student union government president, Comrade Kayode Idowu, said when the matter was reported to him, he took some executive members of the union along to dialogue with the area boys. He said he, even, promised to investigate the matter.

According to Kayode, not long after he and his executives left the place, a student came to inform him that the area boys had dragged a female student to a hideout and were about to rape her. “I quickly called some of my students to go and rescue the student,” Kayode staded.

He said that on sighting them, the area boys started throwing bottles and stones at them and he had to call the Divisional Police Officer incharge of Oko-Oba Police Station for assistance.

He said: “I want to give kudos to the school marshals who stood by us before the arrival of the policemen from Oko-Oba.”

When P.M.NEWS visited Oko-Oba Police Station where the arrested area boys are detained, the DPO said she is waiting for the officer incharge of the rescue operation to brief her on the incident.

“I am interested in the matter. I can’t say anything or now because my officer has not briefed me yet. I am very much interested in it,” she said.
