A Lagos High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the demolition of a five-storey building on Lagos Island.
The building located at 53, Iga-Idunganran Street, is one of the over 200 distressed buildings on the list of the Lagos State Government slated for demolition.
Justice S.O. Nneaka who gave the ruling on Tuesday, declared the building unsafe for human habitation, especially in view of the spate of building collapse in the state in recent times.
Justice Nneaka said that the evidence before the court showed that the building was posing grave danger to its occupants and the adjoining buildings, noting that life was sacrosanct and everything must be done by government to protect it.
According to the court, the owners of the property have been given opportunity to repair it but did not, while the Lagos State Physical Planning and Development Agency (LSPPDA) which championed the litigation, indicated that the building was one of the many in the metropolis with foundation failure.
Meanwhile, some residents of the area have expressed happiness over the court’s order, saying it was a welcome development.
