A Nigerian weightlifter, Balogun Kashimawo Kuhisa, has urged both Lagos State government and would-be athletes to the next National Sports Festival to put all hands on deck for the state to win the sporting fiesta.
While speaking with P.M. Sports at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Kuhisa, who is also a coach, emphasized that the state needs to put structures in place for it to host and win the Games.
“I want to use this medium to appeal to the government of Lagos State to do more to encourage sportsmen in the state. The state needs to encourage the athletes in order to win the Sports Festival next year,†Kuhisa said.
The lifter, who has represented Oyo, Niger and Delta States at different competitions in the past, said Lagos State needs to discover athletes that can represent the state and place them on its payroll in order to be at the top of the log at the next festival.
“Lagos State should encourage these athletes by giving them direct employment where they would be earning monthly salary. Even if their monthly salary is not more than N15,000, it is still all right. This will enable these athletes to commit themselves to the state,†he said.
Kuhisa, however, believes that Lagos State can win the festival if the state can put its act together now and begin preparation.
“It is our time to host the festival. We can win the festival if we get our act together. So we should do our utmost in order to win it.â€
