Landlords and tenants at the Ilunla community, Aradagun in Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State have embarked on self help projects to deflood the community following the heavy rains of the last few days.
Residents of the community were seen digging gutters and removing refuse blocking some of the drains in the area to make way for easy flow of water.
“What we are doing is to provide a temporary relief for ourselves. We are begging the government to come in and take over because we cannot do it well as a result of the cost. “Flooding has been a constant feature of this community for long and after several appeals to the government and nothing was done, we decided to help ourselves.
“We are, however, appealing to the state government to come to our aid in the rehabilitation of the road leading to the community. “When rain falls, our homes and other properties are destroyed as a result of the flood. Students find it difficult to go to school while car owners cannot use their cars,†Mr. S.A Ayeni, a landlord in the community lamented.
A trader in the community, Mr. J.S. Iyoyo appealed to the authorities to provide drainages to put an end to the flooding of the area. “The government should also do something about the bad roads,†he added.
