Maid Steals Employer's N700,000

A 50-year-old housemaid, Grace Udogun was on Tuesday in Lagos arraigned for allegedly stealing N700,000 belonging to her employer.

The accused is facing trial before Magistrate Kemisola Ajayi, of the Yaba Magistrates’ Court on a one-count charge of stealing.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Sgt Benson Emuerhi told the court that the accused committed the alleged theft on Sept. 10, 2010.

He said that the accused stole from Mrs. Joke Oloyede, who employed her as a maid at 19, Odugbemi St., Oworonshoki, Lagos.

“The accused absconded with money kept in the complainant’s mother’s room at about 6.30 p.m.

“It was as if Udogun had taken notice of the fact that money was always being kept there before the alleged theft was carried out,“ he said.

He said that the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

Ajayi granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case till Sept. 26 for further hearing.
