The Nigerian Embassy in Austria said it has begun investigations into the alleged brutalisation of Mr. Uche Obi, a Nigerian deported from Austria.

Obi had claimed that he was humiliated and brutalised by the Austrian police while being deported from the country in January.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Austria, Amb. Maria Laose, told the Europe correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview that her mission was already investigating the matter even though it was yet to get an official complaint.

“I am yet to get the official complaint, nevertheless, having come across this case on the net, I have instructed the consular officer to get me the details for better understanding of what might have happened and for necessary action.”

Laose who is also Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Offices in Vienna said it was untrue that the embassy abandoned Obi and was not willing to render necessary assistance to him.

“I assumed duty on June 27 this year and had not been appointed as an ambassador when the incident took place in January.

“I am yet to receive any official report to that effect. I took interest in this case with the Austria’s Interior Ministry after reading it on the net,” she said.

She appealed to Nigerians to always obey and respect the law of their host countries.
