The Federal Government says it plans to rehabilitate all its dams nationwide as part of efforts to boost agriculture and water resources.

The Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sera Ochekpe, who disclosed this during a visit to Governor Aliyu Wamakko in Sokoto, added that maintenance of the dams would be prioritised.

“We are now after action not mere rhetoric and the Federal Government is committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property of every citizen ,” she said.

Ochekpe urged the state government to detail some Engineers to work together with the staff of the contractors handling the repair of Goronyo Dam to ensure proper supervision and monitoring.

“We are here to visit Goronyo dam based on the directive of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The President is really concerned about the problem. The work on the dam will commence with the repairs of the emergency spill way of the dam which broke last year and caused the devastating flood,” she stated.

Ochekpe also said the work was delayed because the Federal Government had to commission a study to find all it needed to do at the dam.

“We want to make sure that all the observed defects in the entire dam are rectified,’’ she added.

She gave the assurance that the irrigation aspects of the dam would be completed within the shortest possible time to enable the beneficiaries to benefit from the project.

Responding, Wamakko commended Jonathan for showing concern on the matter and other issues concerning the state. The Governor called for the routine maintenance of all dams in the country to prevent the menace of flood occasioned by their collapse.

“We will do every thing humanly possible to ensure the successful execution of the project and all other activities of the ministry. ”
