Senate Chief Whip, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomom, has appealed to the Federal Government to come to the aid of Lagos State by releasing ecological fund to the state immediately.
He made the appeal after 16 members of the Senate led by Rev. George Akume visited Lagos to assess the damage caused by the recent torrential rainfall which led to loss of lives and destruction of property worth billions of naira.
Speaking on the visit, the second term senator told Political Platform that the ACN senators felt the state should not be left alone in its present predicament, hence the visit.
He added that their visit was necessitated by the desire of the National Assembly members to get first hand information on the severity of the flooding.
GOS, as he his fondly called, further said the only way out of flooding and environmental degradation in the state was the immediate release of ecological fund.
He gave kudos to the state government for the proactive steps it took before and after the floods, adding that it was in dire need of Federal Government assistance to solve the problem.
He assured that final solution to the challenges is in sight as the lawmakers will ensure that the Federal Government comes to the aid of the state.
He called on the people to reciprocate the determination of the state government in ensuring that the drainage channels are not blocked with refuse and physical structures.
He pleaded with residents to remain calm as the state government is up to the task of ensuring protection of lives and property, advising them to ensure that the drains are kept free of refuse and other human activities at all times.
The former chairman of the old Mushin Local Government reiterated the need to give the state a special status, given its role as former capital and the commercial nerve centre of the country as well as being a home to people from different parts of the country.
