Security Guard Docked For Stealing Jewellery

A security guard employed by the residents of Williams Layout, Akowonjo, Musiliu Aranse Oyebiyi, 60, has been arrested and charged to court for allegedly breaking into the residence of one of his employers and stealing jewellery worth N10 million.

P.M.NEWS learnt that Oyebiyi of 11, Thomas Ekpo Street, Agbado-Ijaiye, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, illegally entered and burgled the houses he was supposed to provide security for at 5, Olaiya Close. He reportedly stole jewellery and N100,000 cash.

He allegedly committed the offence in company of others now at large.

The matter was reported at the nearby police station and was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

He was arraigned before an Ebute Metta Magistrate’s Court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

The police prosecutor, Corporal Emmanuel Ajayi said the offences are punishable under sections 515, 211(1)(2) and 390(4)(B) of the Criminal Code Cap 17, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

When the charge was read to him, 60-year old Oyebiyi pleaded not guilty.

The presiding magistrate, Mr. M.O. Olubi admitted him to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Olubi further ordered that one of the sureties must be a community leader and the other must be a blood relation to the accused person.

He also ordered that the sureties must show to court evidence of three years tax payment to Lagos state government, show proof of their means of livelihood and be residing within the magisterial district.

He ordered that these must be verified by the court prosecutor

The case has been adjourned till 29 September 2011 for mention.

The accused was later moved to Ikoyi Prison, as he could not perfect the bail conditions before the court closed for the day.
