Secretary General of Nigeria Chess Federation, Bidemi Ganiyu-Opolo, has expressed satisfaction with the performance of the players currently at the Abuja camp ahead of the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique in September.
The secretary assured that Nigerian chess players will not disappoint at the Games, stating that the players are in high spirits and ready to win gold medals at the tourney.
“We had a good outing at the last All-Africa Games and we don’t want to put up anything short of a better performance in Maputo.Right now, we are concentrating so much energy on the training programme and I’m impressed with the commitment of the players, which shows that we’ll have a good outing in Maputo,â€she said.
P.M Sports gathered there are 24 players (males and female) in camp, while only 12 will make the final squad.
Ganiyu Opolo assured that only the best will be selected on merit to represent the country at the All Africa Games.
“I can assure you that we’ll select the players on merit at the end of the camping because we want to see that the best players represent the country in Maputo,” she said.
Nigeria won three gold medals at the last Games in Algiers, Algeria, while odds favour Nigeria again to win more medals aside the individual board order but also in the team event.
