There was pandemonium in Ilesha, Osun State, Southwest Nigeria, this morning when policemen engaged armed robbers in a fierce gun battle.
The robbers were raiding some banks in Isokun area of the commercial town when the police confronted them.
P.M.NEWS learnt that the robbers had gained access into a first generation bank and carted away an unspecified amount of money.
However, they ran into a stumbling block as they made efforts to gain entry into another new generation bank.
Policemen engaged the robbers in a serious exchange of gun fire. The battle later shifted to adjoining streets.
It was gathered that many travellers on the Ilesha-Osun state road and Ekiti axis were caught up in the shootout.
The streets and motor parks suddenly became deserted while shops and houses were hurriedly closed. As at press time, the gun duel was raging and many residents were forced to keep indoors.
