As criticisms against the proposed constitutional amendments to accommodate a single term of six years continue, indication emerged again in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital that the proposed single term bill will die on arrival at the National Assembly.

A member of the House of Representatives representing Ijebu Waterside / Ijebu North / Ijebu East Federal Constituency on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Honourable Abiodun Abudu Balogun assured that the House under its Speaker; Hon. Aminu Tambuwa will reject the proposed bill on its arrival at the House.

Balogun who declared this while speaking with newsmen in Abeokuta today said that all ACN legislators in the House as well as members of other political parties, including PDP, have resolved to work against the success of the bill when eventually sent to the House.

President Goodluck Jonathan said he proposed the single term bill in order to cut election expenses and ensure good governance.

Speaking on the matter, Hon. Balogun said the position of his party, ACN, has been made known, and that is, it is against the bill, adding that all the lawmakers on the platform of ACN would not contravene the position of the party.

According to the Ita-Otu-born politician, “don’t forget that our party is a disciplined party and will always advise us to do the right thing regarding national issues and our party has since taken its stand that we don’t want single term bill.”

The lawmaker stated that the House was yet to receive the single term bill but stressed that when it eventually gets to them, “we will look at it, consider it for its merits and demerits.

“But it behoves on us to block all the loopholes and check corruption, it doesn’t matter if the man that is there is even there for 20 years, we are not bothered. All we want is dividends of democracy for our people, food on their tables, employment, good healthcare services, security and qualitative education.

“I don’t care whether the man there is from Kaura Namoda, Sokoto or whichever place he comes from, it is not my business. All that we want is the best for Nigeria.”

Commenting on the choice of leadership of the House which has continued to generate reactions from eminent Nigerian, Balogun said the House has been able to assert its independence by the choice of Tambuwal, notwithstanding the challenges.

“Against all influences, we made up our minds that we were going to elect our leadership, that we were not going to allow anybody to influence or dictate to us. It was tough and rough, but we stood by what we believed in.

“In spite of all the frustrations and challenges, we did it. And for our Speaker, Rt.Honourable Aminu Tambuwal and his Deputy, Emeka Ihedioha, the way they have conducted the affairs of the House so far is commendable and that is why most of us have decided to support them”, Balogun disclosed.

He further stated that the leadership of the House has promised to ensure that the 7th legislature will not allow any crack among them.

”For instance, the Speaker has said that he personally has undertaking to do things that will touch the lives of Nigerians and we also have a legislative agenda as presented by him to work for Nigerians.

”So, he is a gentleman, an activist and a member of the Civil Society group. He has been doing everything well and we believe that we have made the right choice in our quest for leadership in the House of Representatives,” Balogun stated.
