Five policemen were injured when unknown persons threw an explosive at a police patrol team at a checkpoint around Central Market, Bauchi, the police said.

The incident occurred a day after a policeman and a civilian were injured in a similar incident within the metropolis.

The spokesman for the State Police Command, ASP Muhammed Barau, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the incident occurred when policemen manning the checkpoint were conducting a “stop and search” operation.

Barau said two persons riding a motorcycle had thrown the explosives on the policemen and escaped immediately.

He said the injured persons were receiving medical attention in a hospital.

Barau said although no arrest had been made in connection with the incident, investigations had begun in the matter.

AlhajiAdamu Abubakar, the Bauchi State Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, also confirmed the incident to newsmen.

He said four of the policemen were taken to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.
