FRSC To Lecture Motorists On Highway Code

Motorists applying for the renewal of their driver’s licences will henceforth receive compulsory lecture from the FRSC on defensive driving, use of road and highway code.

Mr. Augustine Aipoh, FRSC’s new Zonal Commander in charge of Zone 7, comprising the FCT and Niger State, made the announcement on Monday when he visited the FCT Sector Command.

He said the two-hour free lecture would come up every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday to complement similar lectures being given by the commission’s accredited driving schools.

Aipoh said the lecture was necessary because some motorists applying for the renewal of their licences might have forgotten what they were taught at the driving schools while learning how to drive.

“The motorists we are talking about now are people who are coming for renewal. Some of them might have forgotten some of the things they were told while learning how to drive.

“We need to remind them, we want to make it compulsory that no person will get a driver’s licence without passing through the weekly lecture.”

On the preparation for the “Ember Months,” the zonal commander said there was no need to separate four months of the year under the tag “ember months” for special patrol.

Aipoh explained that the special operations, such as the quarterly “Operation Zero Tolerance,” and the monthly “Eagle Eye” had been designed by the FRSC to address traffic challenges throughout the year.

“At the beginning of the year, the FRSC said that there was no need for us to separate four months of the year and call them ‘ember months’. So we started by saying that the whole months should be ember months.

“It is now a continuous exercise. It is not something that we do today and we now wait and say until the volume of traffic increase. From the beginning of January, we have Operation Zero Tolerance and Operation Eagle Eye.”

Addressing officers of the FCT Sector Command earlier, Aipoh charged them to take their jobs seriously and shun all acts of corruption.

He urged them to assist the commission in discharging its mandate of ensuring safety on the nation’s highways.
