Local councils in Lagos State have called on the House of Assembly to issue a comprehensive guidelines on the roles, duties and expectations of council officials and political appointees.

The call was contained in a communiqué issued by the councils after a five-day seminar organised for them by the assembly.

Reading the communiqué on the floor of the House, the Clerk, Mr. Olatunji Taiwo, said that the communiqué also called for autonomy for the councils to enable them perform effectively.

The Lagos councils also urged the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to take advantage of its large numbers in the National Assembly to pursue and ensure the listing of the additional 37 councils created in the state.

“The roles of the local government councils should be enshrined in the proposed administrative guidelines to enable the councils to perform optionally without interference,” the communiqué said.

The communiqué also urged the House to passionately consider the enactment of Terminal Benefit Allowance Law for local government political office holders.
