A lawyer, E. C. Ajawara, representing a businesswoman, Mrs. Ngozi Harley in a divorce suit at the Agege Grade ‘A’ Customary Court, Lagos has threatened to sue her husband, Mr. Kingsley Harley, for defamation.
Mr. Kingsley Harley had brought his wife, Ngozi, before the court, seeking the dissolution of their marriage because she was troublesome.
The defence counsel had earlier told the president of the court to strike out the petition because the couple were not Lagosians and their marriage was not consumated in Lagos.
The president of the court, however, overuled him on grounds that the couple were residents of Lagos. After this ruling, the defence counsel sought an adjournment to enable him prepare for the case.
The petitioner disagreed, saying that his life was in danger. “I have heart problem, and I am scared I might die before that time. My wife does not give me rest of mind because we are living in the same house. She is a threat to my life,†he stated.
The president of the court, Emmanuel Shokunle, advised him to exercise patience but the petitioner insisted on the dissolution of the marriage.
