Surety Remanded

A trader at the Mile 12 market, Ketu, Lagos, Jubrin Mukhtar, has been ordered to be remanded in prison on the orders of an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court for failing to produce a suspect in court.

Jubrin, it was learnt, stood surety for his friend, Saliu Yusuf at the Owode Onirin Police Station but failed to produce the suspect when requested since June.

The prosecutor, ASP Eyo Owai arraigned him on one-count charge of failing to produce the suspect.

The charge reads: “That you, Jubrin Mukhtar on the 2 June 2011 at Owode Onirin Police Station within Ogudu magisterial distict did apply and take on bail Salisu Yusuf who is a suspect in a case of serious motor accident under investigation. You promised to produce him when his presence is required until the case against him is finally disposed off or you will forfeit the sum of N50,000 to the Lagos State Government in default, but from 2 June, 2011 up till date you refused to produce him. You are hereby required to show cause why you should not forfeit the said sum to the Lagos State Government.

The police said the offence is punishable under Section 132 (1) of the Criminal Justice Administration.

When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty and Magistrate Y.O. Aje Afunwa admitted him on bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties, he directed, must have land in Lagos.

The case has been adjourned till 19 August, 2011 for mention.
