The initial acclaim was almost universal as motoring journalists wandered among a party of balloons decorating several units of Greatwall’s cars at a media briefing and test drive at the headquarters of CFAO CICA Nigeria Limited, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria last weekend as they poked, prodded and peered into at the remarkable Voleex C30.
That it is remarkable, there is no doubt, that it is well built, spacious, comfortable and has an excellent 1.5litre engine and incredible slick gearbox is beyond dispute, but whether the Voleex will sell in the numbers CICA’s Idris Siyaka is hoping for – well, only time will tell.
Well listen this time: Greatwall’s Voleex is super. Get out of the groove and go for something completely different. Even Mr. Rasheed Bisiryu from The Punch Newspaper, my frequent driving partner, couldn’t find anything to grinch about in the car and we agreed that, if we had N2.4milion and a need for a new car, the Voleex would be way up on our list. Well damn well listen this time: GWM Voleex is super.
It was really intriguing because I found out that the Voleex is a car that handles very well, with round good visibility. I was impressed by the height you drive at for a car of its size. Great views when approaching junctions, whether they be roundabouts or closed T junctions.
Driving the Voleex is fairly enjoyable. The chassis is tight. It feels sporty in some situations, such as quick turns. But it also garnered some complaints from one of the journalists who noticed the potholes against which the suspension offers little resistance. Anyway, Mr. Regis Tromeur, MD, CFAO CICA Nigeria Limited, plainly loves the Voleex. “Never before has GWM made such a bold move,†he said. “The Voleex defies convention and offers a world of possibilities for the young at heart and people with a sense of adventure.â€
At first sight, it is visually arresting. An aggressive front end instantly breaks away from any previous design language GWM had. In terms of exterior and interior design, the Voleex is already hitting a home run with several units sold already.
What about how it drives? GWM’s confidence in their product showed in the driving conditions they subjected their car to. A pleasant drive from CICA Nigeria Limited Office in Ikeja, through Alausa to third mainland bridge terminating at Eleko Beach (overall kilometers covered to and from was 120 kilometers) back to Ikeja office gave us a thorough feel of the Voleex’s driving capabilities.
