Landlord Rapes Househelp, Remanded

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos has ordered that a landlord whose street was named after him, be remanded in prison custody for allegedly raping the 10-year old househelp of his tenant.

The magistrate gave the order while adjourning further hearing in the matter till 24 October after the accused, Mr. Segun Akinwande, failed to meet the conditions attached to the bail. He was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties.

The police had charged him before the court for allegedly raping the girl (name withheld) at his 1, Akinwande Street residence, Suberu Oje, Alagbado Lagos State.

He was said to have invited the househelp into his room when her master, Mr. Thomas Mgbiri, had gone to work.

The lid was blown off the sordid act when the girl reported to neighbours that she was sexually assaulted by the landlord.

P.M.NEWS gathered that tenants in the house raised an alarm and reported the incident to the police while the injured girl was taken to the hospital. But before the arrival of the police, the landlord had fled.

He was arrested the following day by policemen from the Alagbado Police Station and the matter was transferred to Area ‘F’ Police division, Ikeja.

After investigation, he was charged with rape.

Commenting on the incident, a lawyer representing the interest of the victim, Barrister Ifediora condemned the shameful act and vowed to ensure that the landlord was punished.

The lawyer disclosed that he had written to the Office of the Public Defender, a department under the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, to seek justice.
