The Elders Forum of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Lagos State Council has warned against any external interference in its forthcoming general elections.
The forum gave the warning through its chairman and first pioneer National President of the NURTW, Alhaji Majeed Bakare, while speaking on the state of the nation and the recent conference of the union in Abuja, where Alhaji Najim Usman Yassin and Comrade Kingsley E. Ukoh, were re-elected President and National Secretary, respectively.
Commending the leadership of Yassin for his commitment to hard work and dedication, the forum chairman also called on members of the union to support the new leadership and charged members especially in Lagos State to shun hooliganism and thuggery.
He also called on the national leadership of the union to resolve without delay all the pending crisis within the Lagos State branch of the union before the election.
“We appeal to the National body to ensure that the election is conducted free and fair without any crisis. Everyone should be allowed to participate fully.
Alhaji Bakare appealed to members not to mix NURTW activities with party politics, advising that anyone wishing to participate in politics has the constitutional right to resign his membership of the union.
He said the election of Alhaji Yassin as President of the union would no doubt engender rapid development in the union and prayed God to guide the new executive members in the discharge of their official functions.
“We will ensure harmonious and peaceful working relationship with the President and his men as well as industrial peace so that the union will continue to flourish,†he declared.
The national headquarters of NURTW recently dissolved the caretaker committee members of the NURTW, Lagos council as well as other executive members of the union throughout the country.
