The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 31-year-old man who allegedly inflicted injuries on his housemaid for eating pieces of meat.
The spokesman for the command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday that the suspect would be charged o court on today.
Jinadu gave the assurance that the police would diligently prosecute the case to deter other residents of the state from maltreating their servants and violating other people’s rights.
NAN learnt that the suspect was arrested and handed over to the Apapa Police Station by members of the Sagbokoji community in Apapa where he lived.
The suspect, simply identified as Mr. Okpara, was said to have beaten and injured the seven-year-old girl because she allegedly stole and ate some pieces of meat from his wife’s restaurant.
Reliable sources at the Apapa Police Station told NAN that the man and his wife had been maltreating the minor.
The sources said that the couple used to tie the minor’s hands and beat her with wire.
“The people in the community led by Mr. Davis Aderemi, Vice Chairman, Sagbokoji Youth Community, called the police station and reported that case on August 31 at about 10.30p.m.
“About 50 community people came to the station for solidarity with the victim.
“They claimed that, after beating the girl, she ran away from home and hid herself in a pit before she was discovered by some people who reported the case to Aderemi,†one of the sources said.
The girl is currently receiving medical attention at the Apapa General Hospital.
