Assistant basketball coach of Oyo State Sports Council, OYSSC, Mr. Taye Shobogun, said the sports council is committed to reviving the sport in the state and be at par with other states in the country.

Shobogun was one of the coaches at the Olumide Oyedeji basketball clinic that ended at the weekend. The clinic was held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

According to Shobogun, the Sports Council will leave nothing to chance to ensure that Oyo reclaim its lost glory in Nigerian basketball.

He revealled that the mission of the state is to bring an end to the dwindling fortune of the game in Oyo State over a decade now.

“Basketball started going down in 2000 when none of the state’s teams were able to play in the Premier League. It is our desire to see that the state is represented once again in both the male and female premier leagues.

“Right now, we can only boast of a team at the divisional level and this is not enough. We want to make sure we are not only at that level but also compete with other states at the Premier League level,”he said

He dismissed the assertion that there are no quality players in Oyo State that can competewith their counterparts from other states.

“There are so many players in the state that have passion for the game but are not getting encouragement in terms of sponsorship and provision of sporting facilities.

“All that is needed is for their skills to be harnessed and given the proper encouragement so they can mix playing basketball with their academics pursuits.”
