Last Saturday was a day that Nigerian Entertainment Writers Football Team will not forget in a hurry as they suffered a 3-0 defeat in the hands of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Lagos Chapter, in the 1st Christy Essien-Igbokwe invitational football match.

The one-day football eventwas organised by the National Burial committee for Christy Essien-Igbokwe. The popular musician, who died recently after a brief illiness, was honoured by entertainment writers, sports writers, musicians and Nollywoood stars, who were invited to take part in the novelty matches.

In the first opening game played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Entertainment Writers Football Team led by Bayo Adetu of PM NEWS conceded an early goal when Jimmy Akinsola of Beat FM scored at a close range.

Despite the early lead, SWAN continued to put more pressure on their opponents, which paved way for a second goal from Akinsola, another sports writer. Dominic Otiede of Sports Day scored the third goal to end the first half with a wide goal margin.

The second half of the match was not too impressive as both teams appeared to be tired. All efforts by the Entertainment Writers to reduce the goal tally proved abortive as SWAN goalkeeper, Ladi Egbedire, denied them the opportunity of scoring before the end of the game.

After the match, Adetu admitted that his team lost because they didn’t train as a team before the match.
