Afo Football Association has warned all participating teams, who will take part in the Yakub Balogun Soccer Championship, to avoid fielding professional players .

The tourney will kick off on 30 September at the Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos Island.

Chairman Organising Committee, Afolabi Onanaike, told P.M.Sports that some teams have registered players from the country’s national league. This, according to him, is contrary to the rules and regulations of the competition.

Onanaike, popularly known as Afo, said the competition is not meant for professional players. He advised the coaches not to take the tournament as a do-or die affair.

He disclosed that the cup donor, Hon. Yakub Balogun, sponsored the one month-tournament for the benefit of youths on Lagos Island Constituency II.

“We are going to disqualify any team that field ineligible players because the objective of this competition is to give grassroots players on Lagos Island constituency II an opportunity to showcase their God-given talents. We promise all the participating teams fair officiating and good organisation,” he said.

Onanaike disclosed that 35 teams have confirmed their readiness to take part in the competition. He advised interested teams to come for their registration form before 16 September.

“I am impressed with the turnout of teams that came for the registration. This is an indication that the competition will be the first of its kind on the Island when it commences,” he said.
