One of the notable elders in Kano, Malam Yunusa Abdulkarim, has called for special prayers over the increasing number of abandoned children in the state.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Kano that the problem had persisted in spite of calls by Islamic scholars and relevant authorities that people should desist from the immoral act.

Abdulkarim appealed to the residents to be vigilant and assist law enforcement agents in arresting the culprits so that they could be made to face the law.

He said it was not enough for those who engaged in the criminal act to blame their action on poverty, stressing that the culprits had demonstrated that they lacked the fear of God.

He noted with regret that the problem had been further worsened by the decision of most community leaders to reject such abandoned children.
