LASEPA Opens Area Office At Ikorodu

In a bid to effectively check industrial pollution, illegal sand mining and other environmental problems, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, (LASEPA) has opened an Area Office at Odogunyan, Ikorodu.

Speaking during the commissioning of the Agency, its General Manager, Engr. Adebola Shabi, explained that the need to bring environmental regulation closer to Lagosians informed the opening of the Area Office, adding that the new office would henceforth handle all cases relating to environmental pollution within and around Ikorodu.

The general manager added that necessary equipment and manpower had been put in place to facilitate the smooth running of the new office.

Shabi debunked speculations that the Area Office was opened purposely because of Nichemtex, a factory that was recently shut down by the agency due to non-compliance with the etate environmental laws, adding that the office was opened to complement the operations of its headquarters at Ikeja and regulate all industries in Ikorodu and not Nichemtex alone.

He said it was regrettable that the Ibeshe River had been polluted due to the discharge of effluent into water bodies.

Shabi also disclosed that the agency had visited companies in Ikorodu area, including Smintex, Techno Oil, Fatbgems and many others to ascertain if safety and healthy production practices were in place.

The General Manager also disclosed that four additional Area Offices would be opened in other parts of the state soon, explaining that the Ikorodu Area Office would cover Epe, Ojota and Ikorodu areas of the state.

He urged residents of the areas under the new office to forward their complaints or petitions on pollution to the new office.
