The Minister of Transport and Aviation of Sierra Leone, Mr. Vandi Chidi Minah, recently led a delegation of top officials of government of his country to the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, on what he called a learning trip to know how port concession was achieved. He stated that the NPA’s Public Private Partnership is most appealing to the government of Sierra Leone

Minah said Nigeria has been of great support to the government and people of Sierra Leone, adding that these days, the trend is not to look to Europe for example but to look inwards in Africa where there are good examples like Nigeria.

Receiving the delegation, the Managing Director of NPA, Engr. Omar Sulaiman, who was represented by the Executive Director, Marine and Operations, Ms. Aina Egharevba, said that in order to strengthen the long lasting relationship with Sierra Leone, it is important for the two ports authorities to have exchange programmes, adding that for a successful concession programme, Sierra Leone has a lot to gain and learn from the NPA.

She described the present role of NPA as regulatory, with most of the residual duties being marine-related since the operational functions have been transferred to the terminal operators.

Minah said in addition, to learning how the Nigerian ports are run after the concession, they also wanted to create a direct relationship beyond regional forum for better economic ties.
