Boko Haram Leader Who Received Obasanjo Shot Dead

Alhaji Babakura Fugu, a family member of Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf, the slain leader of Boko Haram Islamic militant sect who received President Olusegun Obasanjo in Maiduguri, Borno State was on Saturday afternoon shot dead by unidentified gunmen.

Fugu, 48, was the eldest son of Yusuf’s in-law, Late Ba Fugu, a former Commissioner for Religious Affairs who was also killed during the Boko Haram uprising in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

Fugu and other family members had met and spoken with former President Obasanjo on Thursday as part of efforts to stop bomb and gun attacks attributed to the group which have resulted into scores of deaths in the North East zone and Abuja.

Police account indicated that a lone gunman approached Fugu near his home which is near the site of the sect’s destroyed mosque in Maiduguri, and pulled a rifle from inside the folds of his traditional robes and shot Fugu to death.

Simeone Midenda, Borno State Commissioner of Police who confirmed the tragedy said no one else was wounded in the attack.
