The police at Bariga Police Division, Bariga, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, have arrested a robbery suspect, simply identified as Akindele, who allegedly connived an unidentified accomplice now at large, to rob a Chinese man of his belongings .

A police source told P.M.NEWS that the arrested suspect and his accomplice operated on a Bajaj motorcycle, while dressed in fake FERMA reflective jackets. They reportedly double-crossed the victim, Mr. Yu Quadong, who was driving a Nissan Murano jeep with registration number DW477ILD on the Apapa bridge.

They were said to have flashed fake FERMA identity cards to the expatriate and accused him of violating a traffic rule.

As the victim wound down to ask them what his offence was, Akindele allegedly pointed a pistol at him and told him to shut-up. He was commanded to surrender the bag on the front seat of his car. They took the bag and sped off. The bag, according to the source, contained cheque booklets of Zenith, Oceanic and Enterprise banks and N280,000 cash.

The victim reported the matter at Apapa Police Station and the banks were alerted about the theft of the cheques.

Luck, however, ran out on Akindele when he allegedly presented a Zenith Bank cheque for N400,000 at a branch of the bank. The banks alerted the the police at Bariga Police Division who effected his arrest.

Items recovered from him include fake FERMA identity cards, reflective jacket and some of the stolen documents.

When P.M.NEWS visited the Bariga Police Division to see the DPO for comment, he was said to have gone to the Lagos State Police Command for a meeting, but a police source confirmed the incident. He said the suspect would soon be transferred to the Lagos State Anti-Robbery Unit, Ikeja, after preliminary investigation on the matter.
