FIDA Seeks Speedy Trial For Suspected Rapists
The International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA has condemned the alleged rape of a female student of the Abia State University, Uturu, and called for a speedy trial of the case.
In a statement signed in Abuja on Tuesday by the association’s Country Vice-President, Mrs Ezinwa Okoroafor, FIDA said, “the act contravenes the provisions of the Nigerian Criminal Code.
“FIDA Nigeria hereby condemns in its entirety the gang rape of a young lady by five young men who allegedly claimed she insulted them as well as the subsequent broadcast of the video on the Internet.
“There is an urgent need for investigation into this matter to fish out the miscreants and bring them to the court of law for trial.â€
According to the association, “the impunity of this act and the sheer wickedness displayed by the five young men should be a source of concern to every right-thinking Nigerian.â€
It called on Inspector-General of Police Hafiz Ringim to set up a special team to study the video and dispatch a squad of experienced officers to bring the perpetrators to book.
“This inhuman and dastardly act is a crime against humanity and contravenes the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“It also contravenes the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights as well as other regional and international instruments to which Nigeria is a signatory.â€
