Lagos ACN Demands Restructuring Of The Country

The Lagos State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria has thrown its weight behind the call for the restructuring of the country.

The party says that events in recent times have shown that Nigeria exists on a time bomb if nothing is done to facilitate a restructuring of the country.

In a release in Lagos , signed by the party’s Lagos State Publicity Secretary, Joe Igbokwe, the party says it believes that Nigeria has no meaningful future except its constituent units sit down, talk, iron out their differences and agree on the basis of continued existence.

It therefore calls for the quick convocation of a sovereign national conference to allow Nigerians look into their present structure and effect possible renovations.

“As much as we try to run away from it, we believe that there is no alternative to a national conference to look into the myriad of problems facing this country at present. When we notice the rising spectre of ethnic, sectarian, class struggles that have engulfed the country and our inability to manage them, we feel the need for Nigerians to come together and talk.

“When we notice the rising waves of criminality, corruption, bastardisation of the justice system, rising cases of poverty, infrastructure decay, youth restiveness, unemployment and many other problems besetting the country at present, we believe that only a comprehensive dialogue can resolve these issues.

“Lagos ACN is aware that some people and groups are against the idea of a conference on the argument that it aims at duplicating sovereignty but we state that the intractable nature of the many problems of statehood we are facing today has made the conference unavoidable.”

According to the party, “We believe that living a lie of unity in the present state of siege is inflicting worse damage on Nigerians and the country as a whole. Our demand is even made compelling in the profound state of helplessness that has been official state reaction to these problems.

“We are aware that in recent times, there have been rising voices of clamour for a sovereign conference that will look into the multifarious problems facing Nigeria and proffer solutions to them. We believe that such rising demands can no longer be ignored especially as those opposed to the demand are waning in the face of the mounting problems the country is being saddled with.

“We therefore urge that no time be wasted in convoking a sovereign national conference that will decide the structure and basis of our common existence. We warn that further foot-dragging in acquiescing to the rising demands of Nigerians for this conference will not augur well for the country and its citizens.”
