I Have A Future In Boxing —Adedun
A national record holder in 400 metres at KADA 2009 National Sports Festival in Kaduna, Mariam Adedun, has said that her long time dream is to become a boxing champion.
Adedun told Boxing In Focus after she outpunched Kate Peters at the recently concluded 2nd International Amateur Boxing Show packaged by Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame headed by Mr. Wale Edun.
Adedun, who made a national record of 51.74 seconds at KADA Games, said that she is ready to make a name for herself in boxing just as she has done in athletics.
“I am so happy that I outpunched my opponent in today’s bout. People out there do not believe I can make it in boxing. Some people even think I am overstepping my boundary by going into the sport. But I am happy that I have been able to prove them wrong with my performance today,†said Adedun.
When her attention was called to the fact that her ambition in boxing could jeopardise her blossom career in athletics, the Police Inspector believed otherwise. She explained that it could not be the case because she has been combining the two sports since 17 years ago.
“I have been boxing since 1994 but I dropped the sport for athletics in which I had a national record of 51.74 at the KADA 2009. I believe that I have a future in boxing and I am ready to go to any lengths to achieve my dream,†said the athlete cum boxer.
On how she hopes to achieve her goal, Adedun said that she will fulfil her dream as long as she continues to feature in tournaments.
“The only way that I can express myself is if they continue to feature me in tournaments like the Monthly Saturday Boxing Show organised by the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame. I know that I have a future in boxing but there is no way I can achieve my dream if I am not given the chance to express myself,†said Adedun.
However, the boxer has said that she is prepared to turn professional if she can find a manager who is interested in her.
“I am ready to go professional but the problem is finding a manager who has interest in me. I believe many of these managers have seen my fight today. Therefore, I will be very happy if I can get a manager that would show interest in me as a result of today’s bout,†said the pugilist.
