Members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday passed the motion compelling the Federal Executive Council to initiate a bill that will provide legal framework for the operation of the nine new federal universities created by the Federal Government. The motion was presented by the member representing Ikeja Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Anti-Corruption, Values and Ethics, Hon. James Abiodun Faleke.

In the motion presented on the floor of the House, Faleke observed that since the announcement and creation of the new federal universities, they have been operating illegally because there was no Act of Parliament backing their existence.

“It is important that the new federal universities should have a legal framework to operate and it is the National Assembly which is empowered to provide this legal framework which will legalise the existence and activities of the universities. In the case of the new universities created by the Federal Government, there was nothing of such meaning that the universities are operating illegally,” he said.
