Tongues wagged yesterday afternoon when the Director of Finance and Administration of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Ganiu Olusegun Abiru, took over the role of the immediate past clerk, Taiwo Olatunji.

But before questions could be posed by the guests and journalists at the sitting, a member of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, representing Agege Constituency 1 moved a motion for the appointment of an acting clerk of the House pending when a new clerk of the House would be appointed.

According to him, the appointment of an acting clerk would give the House an opportunity for the House to work with ease.

He was, however, said not to have mentioned any name, and the Speaker of the House, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, asked that another lawmaker move a moption for the appointment of a particular person.

Hodewu Avoseh representing Badagry Constituency 1 quickly moved that Mr. Abiru be appointed as acting clerk till the Civil Service Commission approves the appointment of a clerk. The motion was seconded by Adefunmilayo Tejuosho representing Mushin Constituency 1.

The former clerk of the House who retired in August this year, had said that his successor would be picked among the senior staff of the House.

He said then that this would help to foster the already strong position of the House among the 36 State Houses of Assembly since such a person to be appointed already has knowledge of the way the House is run.
