Organisers of this year’s Speaker’s Cup has concluded plans to raise the prize money to N1 million for the winners.
Last year’s winners went home with the N500,000 and a giant trophy but the organisers believe that the increase in this year’s prize money will help bring the best out of the participating teams.
Former Chairman, House Committee on Sports and Youth Development, Hon. Lawrence Ayeni, said the House wants to make this tournament more attractive by increasing the prizes.
“Last year, we gave out N500,000 to the winner of the cup, but this year, we are looking at making it N1 million. There would also be more consolation prizes this year.
“This is the fourth edition of the tournament which is always used to discover young talents as part of the development of sports in the state.
“You are aware that football and other sporting activities are part of empowerment. That is why the House of Assembly deemed it fit to organise the competition,†he said
Ayeni gave the assurance that teams from all the 57 local government areas of the state would be featured in the competition as part of football development in the state.
He said the tournament concentrated more on the under-age players because it would help to meet the aim of the competition which is to catch-them-young.
The organisers who said registration will soon begin, urged all interested teams to prepare for the tournament.
