NURTW Chairmanship Aspirant In N200m Bribe Scandal

A chairmanship candidate for the Lagos State council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya alias MC Oluomo, has been accused of receiving the sum of N200 million to drop his ambition of contesting in the forthcoming election.

Oluomo was accused of collecting the money from the immediate past chairman of the union, Akanni Rafiu Olohunwa, who is also contesting for the chairmanship seat in the election.

Trouble started last week, when over 65 branch chairmen of the union who are loyalists of Oluomo accused the popular transporter of exchanging phone calls with Olohunwa over his chairmanship ambition.

It was alleged that when a meeting was summoned by the president of the union, Alhaji Nojeem Yasin, between the two contestants in Abuja, Oluomo was made to drop his chairmanship ambition with a N200 million bribe.

Speaking on the controversy, one of the top chairmen of the union in Alimosho local government area of the state who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “we don’t know why Oluomo had to quit the struggle by accepting a bribe from Olohunwa at a meeting held over the weekend in Abuja”.

However, Mr. Samson Adigun, media aide of MC Oluomo, declined to speak on the N200 million bribe allegation, but confirmed that there was a meeting between the two chairmanship hopefuls in Abuja last weekend.

He said: “there was a meeting summoned by the union’s president in Abuja and while they were discussing, Oluomo only gave Olohunwa four conditions to meet with a deadline, while the latter was pleading with the former to step down for him to return unopposed. But I can tell you authoritatively that the meeting ended in a stalemate and they both returned to Lagos.

“Oluomo hasn’t stepped down for Olohunwa. He is going to contest because even the NURTW national president has insisted on the election. Both Oluomo, Olohunwa and other branch chairmen of the union even signed an undertaking at the office of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police on Sunday, promising that they would ensure the election is free and fair,” Adigun added.
