Wheel Chair Tennis: Kano Clinic Discovers New Talents
In what could be termed as an instant benefit, at least 10 talents were discovered in the Golden Penny Noodles Clinic held in the commercial city of Kano during a week-long championship which attracted over 150 players.
Head Coach of the wheel chair tennis, Frank Tarmena, said the players will form the nucleus of the Kano team that will be competing at next year’s National Sports Festival billed for Lagos. He added that the team will now be camped in Lagos in order to get more acquainted with the game under his tutelage.
“Overall, this has been a very successful tournament and the participants can’t stop showering praises on the sponsors because they were captivated by the whole experience. To them, it was like the tournament should run through another week,†he stated.
Tarmena added that the Kano State Government, with its top officials in attendance, was seemingly overwhelmed by the success of the event and its pledged to provide equipment for the players by next week.
The coach said that most of the players that will be camping in Lagos are those that are begging for a living but they are now thrilled by the windowof opportunities that the game provides them.
“This is what a sport like wheelchair tennis is offering Nigerians who are physically-challenged as they now have a career to nuture. They told me they would never go back to begging,†Tarmena said while calling corporate bodies and well-meaning Nigerians to support the game.
