Women Groups Condemn Rape Of Old Women By Youths In Enugu State

Some women groups in Enugu State have condemned the recent raping of old women by youths of Opi in Nsukka Local Government Area, describing it as ”barbaric and bizarre”.

Mrs Joy Ezeilo, the Executive Director, Women Aid Collective (WACOL), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview on Tuesday that it was a violation of women’s rights and a crime against humanity.

She said the act was a defilement of the land, Igbo culture, community and societal morality, adding that the perpetrators deserved life imprisonment with hard labour.

Ezeilo urged security agencies, women organisations, and other stakeholders to join hands in order to fight the moral decadence.

“They should get nothing but life imprisonment and with hard labour because this is what they deserve.

“And I hope that the police – all the security forces – will swing into action. We will lend our support and am sure many other women groups across Nigeria will come and lend their support to stop this violation. This is inhuman.”
