Council Polls: 31,000 Cops Deployed For Security

Ahead of tomorrow’s local government polls in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, at least 31,000 policemen, civil defence and other para-military officers have been drafted to provide security during the election.

Leading political parties will field candidates for the chairmanship and councillorship positions in the 20 local governments and the 37 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs in the state.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC said it is ready to conduct a free and fair election devoid of rancour and acrimony tomorrow.

Speaking with P.M.NEWS, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Samuel Jinadu said the police was ready to ensure a hitch-free voting exercise across the Lagos metropolis tomorrow.

He disclosed that at least 31,000 police officers and other security agents had been deployed to prevent any form of violence that might arise during the polls, saying that the police would not allow some unscrupulous elements in the society to disrupt the polls.

Jinadu assured Lagosians of security for their lives and properties.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Yakubu Alkali had been working round the clock to ensure peaceful polls tomorrow.

According to him, Commissioner of Police had held a stakeholder’s meeting with all the political parties to sensitise them on the need to shun politics of bitterness and rancour.

He said the politicians had promised to play by the rules of the game so that peace and harmony could reign in the state.

In a bid to ensure that the council polls were free and fair and to prevent multiple voting, restriction of movement has been ordered by the state government between the hours of 7.00 am and 4.00 pm tomorrow.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba appealed to Lagosians to come out and vote for the candidates of their choice and ensure that they did not roam the streets during the election.

The main contestants for the various positions are the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Unlike in the past, the PDP would be contesting the elections in the 20 Local Governments and the 37 LCDAs. The Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, is also showing its strong presence in Agege council.
