Obasanjo’s University Boils As Students Go On The Rampage

The Bells,a private university owned by the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was yesterday thrown into confusion when the students went on the rampage.

They held  their lecturers and other non academic staff members hostage for hours.

The university which is located in Ota, Ado Odo/Ota Local Government
Area of Ogun state, southwest
Nigeria, was embroiled in violence as the students decried the lack of basic needs, which according to them, has made the environment not conducive to learning.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, confided in our
correspondent that “the students in their hundreds marched to the
administrative block where all the officers were, demanding for urgent
provision of some facilities they said were lacking in the university.”

All efforts to get across to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the
institution by our correspondent to comment on the riot were
futile as he could not be reached through his mobile phone.

One of the university lecturers who does not want his name mentioned, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on phone, but described the action of the students as “a mere protest over basic needs.”
He, however, said  that normalcy has returned  to the campus around
6.00pm,as the students have been promised that their demands will be
looked into and be provided soon.

Our correspondent gathered that the students were protesting over lack
of basic needs like accommodation, adequate supply of water and other
facilities.

Meanwhile, the students, according to the  source, have given the management an ultimatum but declined to disclose the time frame within which their demands should be met.
