Court Remands Ex-convict, Accomplice In Prison Custody For Rape, Armed Robbery

An Ilorin Magistrate’s Court on Friday remanded an ex-convict, Abdulkadir Ayomide (31), and his accomplice, Umoru Abubakar (31), in prison custody for alleged rape and armed robbery.

They were arraigned before Magistrate Kudirat Yahaya on a three-count-charge of rape, armed robbery and receiving stolen property.

Police Prosecutor Insp. David Wodi told the court that the first accused was alleged to have raped a student of the University of Ilorin, while being armed with a knife.

He said the complainant was allegedly dispossessed of some valuable items worth N415,000  including one blackberry handset, Nokia E66 handset, one Toshiba laptop, an Etisalat modem and  jewelry.

Wodi added that the complainant was able to identify Abdulkadir, who was detained in connection with another robbery case.

He said that when the suspect’s house was searched, a blue and white stripe shirt as well as a palm sandal allegedly worn by the suspect to commit the offence was recovered from his house.

Wodi alleged that during interrogation, the suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime, while his accomplice, Abubakar, a receiver of the stolen items, who bought the jewelry, was arrested and also confessed to the crime.

He told the court that police investigation had shown that the first accused invaded the complainant’s room on October 13 with a kitchen knife and forcefully raped her.
The magistrate declined to take the plea of the accused, saying the court had no jurisdiction over the case.

Counsel to the second accused, Mr Ambali Abdulkabir, pleaded for bail on behalf of his client, saying he received the stolen property unknown to him that they were stolen.

The Magistrate turned down the application for bail and ordered that they be remanded in prison custody.
She adjourned the case till November 27.
