Doctors Threaten To Protest Over Bad Road
Due to the worsening situation of the East-West road, especially the portion leading to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital,UPTH, the Rivers capital, that has almost cut into two, doctors are threatening to go on peace public protest to draw the attention of authorities to the state of road.
The Chairman of Association of Resident Doctors UPTH branch, Dr. Job Ototwala, disclosed that doctors whose primary responsibility is to save lives are concerned about the deplorable state the federal road and the danger it poses for the sick and pregnant women being rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.
Dr. Otokwala lamented the man- hour lost on the only access road linking the South-South states and a referral hospital like UPTH could be neglected at the risk of the lives of the sick and medical personnel who ply the road on daily basis.
Otokwala called both the state and Federal Government to do something about the road.
The Federal Government had awarded contract for the road about four years ago, but no substantial work has been done.
Meanwhile, the poor state of the road has attracted the attention of members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who have resolved that the Speaker, Otebelema Amachree, invite the Commissioner for Works, Victor Giadom and the contractor handling the road for a meeting on the road.
