In a three-hour judgement, the tribunal chairman, Justice Bashir Sukola dismissed the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, because it lacked merit and also frivolous.

Counsel to the petitioner and the respondents had earlier submitted their written addresses. The tribunal wrote to them to notify them of today’s judgement.

PDP’s governorship candidate, Chief Adetunji Olurin had approached the tribunal, urging it to declare him the winner, claiming that he scored the highest votes cast in the election.

PDP also prayed that the votes scored by PPN members should be added to that of PDP since, according to the petitioners, PPN members were PDP members.

Their prayers were opposed by the respondents, the ACN and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Meanwhile, only a few PDP supporters were around the court premises this morning to listen to the judgement.

Some of them who spoke with our correspondent immediately after the judgement disclosed that the judgement was not a surprise to them.

According to an ACN stalwart who was also in court, “this shows that the victory of the governor is clear. You can see that they also have accepted the fact that they are chasing shadows. That is why you didn’t see any of the leaders or their supporters in court today.”

Today, the election petition tribunal in Jos, the Plateau state capital, also upheld the election of the state Governor, Jonah Jang of the PDP, while dismissing the petition of Pauline Tallen of Labour Party, against the victory of Jang.
