SON Gives Importers Deadline To Withdraw Fake Bulbs

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has given importers of fake bulbs a two-week ultimatum to withdraw the substandard products from circulation.

Dr Joseph Odumodu, the Director-General of SON, gave the directive at a stakeholders meeting with bulb importers and dealers in Lagos.

Odumodu warned the importers to surrender the bulbs in their possession to SON, saying offenders would be prosecuted upon seizure.

He also directed the importers to register their products with the organisation or have their warehouses sealed up.

Odumodu said the action became necessary because of the low quality of most of the bulbs in circulation.

He vowed that the organisation would no longer condone the sharp practices of the importers which deny citizens value for their money.

Odumodu said a situation where over 70 per cent of bulbs in Nigerian markets were substandard was not healthy for the system.

The director-general said the situation was making the country to lose about N500 million to the patronage of fake and substandard bulbs annually.

Odumodu said the products fell short of the requirements of the Nigerian Industrial Standards and were not fit for the market.
