Lagos Tertiary Games: Schools Get N3.250m For Preparation

N3.2 million will be shared among the participating institutions taking part in the 3rd edition of Lagos Tertiary Games for preparation for the tournament.

This is apart from the sum of N9.625m, which is expected to be won as prize monies in the championship which will hold from 10-19 November.

P.M.Sports gathered that the Local Organising Committee, LOC, gave out N3.250m to support the participating institutions for their camping and other preparations for the tournament while the prize monies will be directly disbursed to the lucky students through their institutions.

The LOC was constituted by the representatives of all the participating institutions and relevant sports associations involved in the organisation of the tourney under the chairmanship of Prince Wale Oladunjoye, the Senior Special Assistant, SSA, on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Raji Fashola, SAN.

At least 17 tertiary institutions in the state will compete in seven sports during the 10-day event being facilitated by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to the Governor, .

The institutions are University of Lagos, UNILAG, Lagos State University, LASU, Nigerian Army School of Finance, Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOLY, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, AOCOED, Yaba College of Technology, School of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Michael Otedola College of Education and Federal College of Education (Technical).

Others are Nigerian Institute of Journalism, NIJ, Grace Polytechnic, Ronik Polytechnic, Caleb University, Imota, Wave Crest School of Catering and Hotel Management, Ansar ud-Deen College of Education, Wolex Polytechnic and Lagos City Polytechnic.

The sporting events include athletics (100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m, 4x400m), basketball (men and women), soccer (men), beach soccer (men), table tennis (singles-men and women), volleyball (men and women) and beach volleyball (men and women).

The school sports competition is designed to bond and foster sporting relationship among tertiary institutions in Lagos State as well as spotting talents for inclusion in the state’s team.

The LOC has been meeting to fine tune preparations for the competition, while the participating schools have been advised to submit entry forms duly authenticated by the schools’ principal officers on or before 3 November.

The second edition of the Tertiary Games was held between 24 June and 3 July, 2010 at the end of which LASPOTECH topped the medal table with 8 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals.

 

In the second position were UNILAG, which won 5 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals. Third position went to Yaba College of Technology team with 4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.

LASU came fourth with 2 gold, 2 silver and 9 bronze medals. Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education came fifth with 1 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medal. In the sixth position were Army School of Finance and Administration with 1 gold medal, while the seventh position went to St. Augustine College of Education with 2 bronze medals.

Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education won the football gold after defeating LASU 4-2 through penalty shootout after the two teams played 1-1 in the regulation time at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. The football bronze medal went to LASPOTECH, who walloped Federal Technical College (Technical), Akoka 5-0.
