Man Arraigned Over Cow Theft


A 28-year-old man, Dauru Yusuf, a butcher at Abattoir market, Agege, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, has been remanded at the Kirikiri maximum prisons, Apapa, Lagos, for stealing a cow worth N170,000 belonging to his employer, Usman Dikko.

The accused person reportedly stole the cow on 14 October, 2011. The police charged him before an Ikeja magistrate’s court sitting in Abule Egba, Lagos, on a two-count charge of stealing.

The offence, according to the prosecutor, Inspector Lugard Ahonle, is punishable under Sections 508 and 390(9), Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria.

Count two of the charge reads: “That you Dauru Yusuf on 14 October, 2011 at about 05:00hrs at Abattoir, Agege in the Ikeja Magisterial District did steal a live cow worth N170,000 belonging to Usman Dikko and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 77, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.”

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr. O.A. Komolafe, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. He said the surety must be a community leader and present affidavit of means, tax and NEPA bill to the prosecutor for verification.

The matter has been adjourned till 9 January, 2011.
