Robbers Kill Policemen In Port Harcourt

A gang of  armed robbers has ambushed a bullion van in a village called Elikpokwuodu in Rukpokwu,in Obio-Akpor Local Government area, a suburb of Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

Six policemen and three passersby were feared dead in the attack on Friday.

Eyewitness account said that the  robbers in possession of more sophisticated fire power  succeeded in carting away an unspecified amount of cash running into millions of naira.

In the last three weeks at least eight policemen have been killed and five civilians also shot dead in three major robbery incidents.

In all the operations no member of the gangs has been arrested.

Mr .Benjamin Ugwuegbulem, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer confirmed the incident but explained that  at 4.25pm, Amadi Eze reported that he was leader of special Escort from Oceanic Bank Trans/Amadi,Port Harcourt.

According to police account, the team left the Oceanic  Bank Trans-Amadi branch for the Port Harcourt International Airport to pick cash (amount not mentioned yet) but on their way back along Airport/Rukpokwu Road, one of the escort vans developed a fault at Market junction, Rukpokwu.

He said as the policemen and bank officials contemplated on what to do with the faulty van, “armed men took advantage and attacked them from the back. The escort men engaged the robbers in a shoot out.”

Ugwuegbulem said that as a result, “two policemen and two others, one of whom is confirmed to be a member of the gang were fatally injured.”

He claimed that two police rifles and  a sum of N5.6 million  were recovered and several patrol teams  chased the fleeing hoodlums while investigation continues.
